How Green Light Therapy Can Reverse Sun Damage

Updated: Sep 10, 2022

It's the start of fall in 2022 y'all! All of us here at A Body Vibe hope you have enjoyed your summer and made some amazing memories - we definitely did!

As summer has now come to an end, I want to discuss the importance of post summer skincare. As a Florida girl born and raised, I know how tempting it can be to spend countless hours in the sun, wanting to get that bronzed sunkissed glow. As gorgeous as we can all agree it looks, it is also equally as damaging to the skin. Causing dark spots, fine lines and other signs of harmful sun damage like deep wrinkles and sometimes even a leather-like consistency.

And we want our skin to be supple, smooth and soft.. right?

So while umbrellas, suncreen, hats, and tents can all be our best friends in the months of June through September, the sun can still wreck havoc on our faces through SPFs and clothing.

When I was in my twenties, I made the huge mistake of taking tanning injections, in hopes of raising the melanin in my skin to acquire a deeper tan when I went outside in the sun. While it did work, it also caused all of my beauty marks to darken, and caused a sun spot on the side of my face that I couldn't get rid of for years.

Call me crazy, but we all do stupid things when we're young. (That was one of mine.)

Thankfully, I grew a little older and realized that getting a deep tan from the sun just wasn't worth the extensive long-term damage done to my skin. Too much time spent in the sun can cause premature aging called photoaging.

Photoaging can cause:

  • Freckling/skin discoloration

  • Leathery-like skin

  • Deep wrinkles

  • Coarse, dry skin

Things that nobody wants to deal with as they get older. So what exactly is a good way to reverse sun damage?

I give you the green light.

Before we go into the amazing benefits of green light therapy, let's talk a little about it's history.

Light therapy has been used since ancient times, the Greeks being the first to record the healing properties of light therapy (called heliotherapy), back in 1500 BC. They suggested that exposure to light was essential for health restoration.

The history of light therapy also dates back more than 3000 years ago in India, where sunlight was used for therapeutic purposes. The ancient Egyptians and even the Chinese also have texts describing color and light therapy for different health problems, skin disorders and even mental health issues.

Green light therapy is your go-to for when you are wanting to lighten sun spots and reduce hyper-pigmentation caused by the sun. It's also beneficial for getting rid of dark circles under the eyes, rosacea, vitiligo, facial redness, and any other skin discolorations and UV-ray damage caused by the sun.

It works by reducing melasma and targeting melanocytes, which are the cells that produces melanin in the epidermis layer of the skin. This stops the production of producing excess melanin from coming to the surface of the skin. It helps to lighten and even out the skin tone and breaks up the pigment while diminishing any current hyper-pigmentation.

While green light therapy is extremely beneficial in reversing sun damage, it also can help with migraines, chronic pain relief such as fibromyalgia, and has an overall calming effect that can help improve sleep.

So if you're looking for a way to reverse the time you've spent in the hot sun over the summer, green light therapy is a great addition to a fall skincare regimen. Get yourself ready for the holidays, and schedule an appointment with us to incorporate led light therapy into your weekly routine. We promise it's worth it!
